AMS Studies in Modern Society, No. 25

Psychology in the Trenches develops many of the ideas about personality that Dr. Corson discussed in Stress, Self-Concept, and Violence (AMS, 1989). While still considering his subject through an analysis of the case histories of violent people, here Dr. Corson also discusses clients who have no history of violent behavior: combat veterans with severe post-traumatic stress disorder, people who suffer panic attacks, sex offenders, and people who find it difficult to deal with the stresses of daily life. He shows how carefully selected principles of learning and attention to data gathered at each session can guide the course of treatment. And how it is possible—even with limited staff in a rural setting—to design individualized interventions that lead to tangible benefits for this very challenging (and growing) population of clients.

John A. Corson, Ph.D., is a professor in the Psychiatry Department at Dartmouth Medical School and an Adjunct Professor in the Psychology Department of Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. He is also Chief of the Psychology Section at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Vermont.
